American Airlines Adds Flights To Porto, Reykjavik, Vienna, And More

Yesterday, American Airlines teased plans to announce new international routes, with a fun game inviting travelers to “decode” the destinations the airline would add. Well, the wait is over, and American has just announced the details of its international expansion for the summer of 2027.

There are some cool additions, though of course it’s hard to make an announcement a couple of days after United Airlines, given the totally different scale of the carriers’ long haul route networks.

Details of American’s international expansion summer 2027

For the summer of 2027, American has announced plans to add eight long haul international routes, with tickets expected to go on sale as of August 31, 2026. To start, you can find the details of all route additions below.

For context on these route additions:

• The service between Chicago and Tokyo had already been announced, and American is simply replacing joint venture partner Japan Airlines in this market
• Porto and Vienna are all-new destinations for the airline; American is becoming the only US carrier to fly to Vienna, while Porto is also served by Delta and United (the airline had already revealed plans to fly to Porto)
• Reykjavik is a destination that American last served in 2019; let me emphasize that flights will be operated by the A321neo, so won’t have flat beds, and I’d imagine the forward cabin will just be sold as premium economy
• The routes to Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Nice, simply represent new routes to existing destinations, while the New York to London route is just a fourth daily frequency in an existing market

For the markets that are summer seasonal, American tells me that it’s still figuring out how long those seasons will last. The only one that has been decided on is that Vienna flights will go all the way into early January 2028, so that travelers can visit Christmas markets. That’s cool, and quite the extension of the typical summer seasonal schedule.

“Coming off a summer of celebration, American is growing to offer new destinations and routes, bolstering our premium global route offerings. Our international network has expanded to offer destinations to satisfy every travel palate. Combined with our investments enhancing our onboard product and inflight experience, travelers have more reasons to choose American when they fly around the world.”

My take on American’s latest international expansion

Obviously American’s international expansion isn’t going to make headlines in the same way as United’s, since we’re just talking about a much smaller growth profile. United is adding 10 new destinations, while American is adding three new destinations.

I don’t think there’s really anything here that’s going to rock the boat. The coolest thing is that we’re finally going to see a US airline fly to Vienna. United doesn’t fly there since there’s no point in replicating the network of its joint venture partner Austrian, while Delta seems to struggle with service to Lufthansa Group hubs, based on the route cuts we’ve seen in the past. I also love how long that seasonal route will last.

Beyond that, though… new service to Porto? Great! Another option for getting to Nice? That’ll be popular. Another flight to Amsterdam? Sure, we’ll take it. A new route to Reykjavik? Cool in theory, but bleh on those A321neos. A fourth daily flight between New York and London? Yawn.

Bottom line

American Airlines has revealed the details of its summer 2027 expansion. We’ll see the airline add three new destinations, including Porto, Reykjavik, and Vienna, with the last destination otherwise not being served by any US airline. On top of that, the airline will add more routes to Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Nice, an additional frequency to London, and a previously announced route to Tokyo.

I’m always happy to see new international routes, though this is hardly some blockbuster announcement.
